אות א:

• יש מרבותינו דורשין אותו לשבח כו' ויש דורשין כו'Some of our Rabbis expound it as praise, and some expound it [as criticism]
• לפי דורו היה צדיק ואילו היה בדורו של אברהם לא היה נחשב לכלוםBy the standard of his generation he was righteous, but had he lived in Avraham's generation he would not have been considered anything

• כיון שגבר עליהם בראיותיו ביקש המלך להורגוOnce he defeated them with his proofs, the king sought to kill him
• היה מהלך וקורא ומקבץ העם מעיר לעירHe would go, call out and gather the people from city to city
• עד שנתקבצו אליו אלפים ורבבותUntil thousands and tens of thousands gathered to him
• ושתל בלבם העיקר הגדול הזהAnd he planted this great principle in their hearts

• אילו היה בדורו של אברהם לא היה נחשב לכלוםHad he lived in Avraham's generation, he would not have been considered anything

• חוזרין בני יעקב לטעות העולם ותעיותןThe children of Yaakov would have returned to the world's error and straying

• אכלול בו כל המצות שהם עיקר דת משה רבינו ע"ה כו' כגון יחוד השם ב"ה ואיסורי ע"ז וקראתי שם ספר זה ספר המדעI will include in it all the Mitzvos that are the foundation of the religion of Moshe Rabbeinu, such as the Oneness of Hashem and the prohibitions of idolatry, and I called this book Sefer HaMada
