אות א
- אל תירא אברם אנכי מגן לך שכרך הרבה מאד–Do not fear, Avram; I am a shield for you; your reward is very great
- נעשה לו נס זה שהרג את המלכים . . שמא קבלתי שכר על כל צדקותי–This miracle was done for him, that he killed the kings... perhaps I have received reward for all my righteousness
- (ו)מה שאתה דואג על קבול שכרך, שכרך הרבה מאד–As for your worry about receiving your reward, your reward is very great
- עוסק בתורה ובמצות . . לא מפני דבר בעולם . . ולא כדי לירש הטובה אלא עושה האמת מפני שהוא אמת–Engages in Torah and Mitzvos... not for anything in the world... nor to inherit the good, but does what is true because it is true

- וסוף הטובה לבוא בגללה–And the good will ultimately come because of it

אות ג
- יהבי לי' אורך ימים בעלמא דאתי ויהבי לי' עושר וכבוד בעלמא דין–They give him length of days in the World to Come, and give him wealth and honor in this world
- אורכא דחיי בעלמא דאתי–Length of life in the World to Come
- רווק חד–A certain bachelor
- בעינא למילעי באורייתא–I want to toil in Torah
- הארעווען–Toil/labor
- עותרא–Wealth
- דיקרון לי' ר' יוסי מארי דעותרא ויקרא–That they should call him R' Yosi, master of wealth and honor
- אן הוא עותרא–Where is the wealth
- שמע מינה דלאו לשם שמים קא עביד–This shows he is not doing it for the sake of Heaven
- שימות אותו תלמיד כיון שהי' עוסק שלא לשמה–That this student should die, since he learned not for its own sake
- שמע חד קלא דהוה אמר לא תענשי' דגברא רבא ליהוי–He heard a voice saying: Do not punish him, for he will be a great man
- ואנא יהיבנא לך עותרא–And I will give you wealth
- ואנא יהיבנא עותרא–And I will give wealth
- יהב לי' ההוא כסא דפז–He gave him a cup of fine gold

- יתיב (ר' יוסי) ולעא באורייתא–He sat and toiled in Torah
- וההוא בר נש הוה יהיב לי' עותרא–And that man would give him wealth
- אמר השתא ש"מ דהא לשם שמים קא עביד–He said: Now it is clear he is doing it for the sake of Heaven

- קרא לי' לההוא גברא א"ל טול עותרך–He called that man and said to him: Take your wealth
- והב לי' ליתמי ולמסכני–Give it to orphans and the poor
- ואנא יהיבנא לך חולק יתיר באורייתא–And I will give you a greater share in Torah
- אהדר לי'–Returned to him
- כסא דפז–Cup of fine gold
- לא אעדי שמי'–His name did not depart

- לעולם יעסוק אדם בתורה ומצות אע"פ שלא לשמה שמתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה–A person should always engage in Torah and Mitzvos even not for their own sake, for from not for its own sake he comes to for its own sake
- מאן דבעי עותרא .. ייתי וישתדל באורייתא–Whoever wants wealth... should come and toil in Torah
- כדי שיהי' לי עותרא–So that I will have wealth
- מארי דעותרא ויקרא–Master of wealth and honor
- לההוא גברא–To that man

- גברא רבא ליהוי–He will become a great man

- לעולם יעסוק אדם בתורה ומצות אע"פ שלא לשמה–A person should always occupy himself with Torah and Mitzvos, even not for its own sake

- למאי נפק"מ–What difference does it make
- רווק–Unmarried man
אות ו
- מתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה–From (doing) not for its own sake one comes to (doing) for its own sake
- וועגט ... איבער–Outweighs
- שהמצוה נעשית כתקנה .. אלא שמחשבתו אינה לשם מצוה–The Mitzvah is done properly .. only his thought is not for the sake of the Mitzvah

אות ז
- שלומד . . לקבל פרס בעוה"ב או אפילו בעולם הזה עושר וכבוד של משמאילים בה הניתן מן השמים–Who learns .. to receive reward in the World to Come, or even in this world the wealth and honor of those who go to its left, which is given from Heaven
- להתפרנס במלמדות או דיינות והוראות–To earn a living by teaching, judging or giving rulings
- אל תעשה (תורה) עטרה להתגדל בה ולא קרדום לחתך בה–Do not make (Torah) a crown to make yourself great with, nor a spade to dig with
- ס'איז נאר וואס–It is only that
- מי שאין לו יראת שמים לדבר (בדברי תורה) לשמם אלא להתגדל או להתפרנס מוטב שיעסוק בתורה שלא לשמה משיתבטל ויפרוש כי מתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה–One who lacks the fear of Heaven to learn for its own sake, only for greatness or a living: better he learn not for its sake than stop and withdraw, for from not for its sake he comes to for its sake
- לקבל פרס .. אפילו בעוה"ז עושר וכבוד . . הניתן מן השמים–To receive reward... even in this world, wealth and honor... given from Heaven
אות ח
- מאן בעי עותרא כו' ייתי וישתדל באורייתא–Whoever wants wealth... let him come and toil in Torah
- בעינא למלעי באורייתא כדי שיהי' לי עותרא–I want to toil in Torah so that I will have wealth
- באזארגן–Provide/supply
- משתמש בכתרה של תורה–Makes use of the crown of Torah
- נעקר מן העולם–Is uprooted from the world
- ויומתק בזה–This also explains well
- רווק–Bachelor
- מלמדו לכף זכות–Judge him favorably
- שארה כסותה . . לא יגרע–Her food, her clothing... he shall not diminish
- גברא רבא ליהוי–He will be a great man

- לעולם יעסוק אדם כו' שמתוך שלא לשמה בא לשמה–A person should always engage [in Torah even not for its own sake], for from (learning) not for its own sake he comes to (learning) for its own sake

- לעשות כל המצות כו' ויצרו הוא שתקפו–[He wants] to do all the Mitzvos..., and it is his Yetzer that overpowered him
- ומהאי טעמא–And for this reason
- רעכנט מען זיך מיט–One takes into account
- לומד ע"מ שיכבדוהו–Learns so that he be honored
- לקנתר חביריו–To taunt his fellows
- נוח לו שלא נברא–Better for him not to have been created
- אינו מקיים מה שלומד–Does not fulfill what he learns
- תכלית חכמה תשובה ומעשים טובים–The purpose of wisdom is Teshuvah and good deeds
- שלא לעשות–Not in order to do (it)
- עצם (תכלית ה)לימוד–The (purpose of the) learning itself
- לקנתר–To taunt/provoke
- נוח לו שלא נברא–Better for him had he not been created

- תוך–Inner core/inside
- באופן של סגולה–In a supernatural manner
- תוצאה טבעית–Natural result
- דורכאויס–Throughout/completely
- קומט צו–Is due (to him)
- ואגדלה שמך–And I will make your name great
- בטל במציאות–Utterly self-nullified
- ואנכי עפר ואפר–And I am dust and ashes

אות יב
- גברא רבא–A great man
- שאין במדינה גדול בחכמה כמוהו–There is none in the land as great in wisdom as he
- והצבור מצווין לפרנסו בכבוד–And the community is obligated to support him honorably
- ואפילו לעשרו–And even to make him wealthy
- גדלוהו משל אחיו–Make him great from (the wealth of) his brothers
- וה"ה לכל גדול הדור–And the same applies to every great man of the generation
- בהווה–At present
